Northern has partnered with Fanshawe College for several years to bring students web development education and agency experience. This year, Northern and Fanshawe College will continue their partnership—collaborating on multiple educational initiatives. Students will receive hands-on, experiential learning opportunities from Northern mentors through this partnership and create digital experiences built on leading content management systems.

Our diverse team of passionate technical experts brings new perspectives and ideas to help students build industry-leading digital solutions.

Many former course students, interns, and co-op students have become full-time Northern employees.

This year, we’re offering students:

Courses

Shopify Web Development

Taught by Northern’s Shopify team Development Manager and Tech Lead, students will learn the fundamentals of building high-performing eCommerce websites using Shopify’s all-in-one commerce platform, as well as career-specific software skills. The course will empower students with the knowledge and experience necessary for a career in eCommerce web development and get a jumpstart toward Shopify’s Product Fundamentals Certification. Students create immersive, high-performing commerce websites from strategy to implementation and management.

Drupal Web Development

Taught by Northern Commerce's Certified Drupal Tech Leads and Front-End Lead, students learn the basics of developing enterprise-level digital experiences with the Drupal 9 open-source content management system. This program provides an industry-standard, hands-on learning opportunity to give students a leg up in their future careers and help them gain employment upon graduation. Even if your goal isn't to become a web developer, combining this course with your diploma introduces several opportunities in the web industry, such as CMS content managers/editors, web marketers, project managers, freelancers, and more.

Digital Marketing Challenge

Northern and Fanshaw’s experiential learning competition invites teams of students from Fanshawe’s Business Administration Marketing, Marketing Management, or Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Digital Marketing) to plan, implement, and manage live marketing campaigns using Google and Facebook for 13 local businesses.

Internships & Co-Ops

Many of our interns and co-op students come from Fanshawe. Some are past participants in the short courses or the Digital Marketing Challenge who chose to pursue a lengthier opportunity to keep learning. Others are looking for the “agency” experience, gaining exposure to a breadth of project types instead of more specific expertise in one category—such as a developer working solely on one website for the entirety of their term. Our four-month placements give students the chance to work on multiple projects across various disciplines and teams that help them find their strengths and improve with an expert mentor.

Looking Ahead

We're excited to meet this year's cohort of students, and as Northern continues to grow, we look forward to pursuing partnerships with more educational institutions in Southwestern Ontario.

Northern is currently offering internships and co-operative education placements in web development.
